History

When North Hants Golf Club opened in May 1904 its ambitions extended much more widely than just providing a golf course. It was to have the ethos of a gentleman's club and the facilities of an American Country Club. From the beginning there were lawn tennis courts and croquet lawns of the highest quality. The clubhouse provided dining facilities and overnight accommodation with a dozen or so bedrooms.

All that has long since changed. A new clubhouse was opened in 2003 and the old clubhouse demolished. The 20 lawn tennis courts and the 4 croquet lawns barely survived the war, being finally abandoned in 1948 and converted into the practice ground. The golf course bears the imprint of four famous golf course architects. It was designed by James Braid in 1904 , then a youthful and recent Open Champion. Harry Colt extensively redesigned it in 1913, it was modified by Tom Simpson in 1930 and Donald Steel designed the three new holes in 2001.

North Hants Golf Club has a long and fascinating history which has been superbly documented by John Littlewood in "North Hants Golf Club 1904 - 2004" These notes about the Club and the Hampshire Hog are taken from his book which is available for purchse.
